it was evening / when we found
you in the garden / sleeping in
the middle of a fairy ring / or
that’s how we’ve chosen to
interpret the event / now know
that I am not saying you are
magic / but rather that it is
drawn to you / like all new
mysteries are / the figure of
a body laid out in the set
-ting sun / as though to dry /
god’s tic-tac-toe / circling
you on a piece of paper
that wraps around the Earth /
every new myth is fake news /
but we’re living in it still /
deep in the murk of reality /
where truth becomes, like
memory, magic / faeries
may or may not be real / but
that’s really good enough / as
a kid I learnt that fairy rings
are just rings of mushrooms /
but I don’t remember why they
grow the way they do / who knows
anything real about growth anyway /
they only know about it once it’s
over / that’s like saying a roller-
coaster was easy / when you’ve
spent 3 minutes screaming / that’s
life, baby / just a number of mysteries
and reinterpretations / reinterpretations /
reinterpretations / anything can be anything
when you want it to be / so when you fell
asleep on the lawn / I didn’t label it as
the result of a night of drunken
revelry / but rather / a human rebelling
against the lack of magic / we label
fairy rings fairy rings / and not
just fungi feasting on an underground
corpse / we choose to call many things
love / and through that we speak them
into existence / who gives a damn about
those who know things / who needs to
know anything at all except god / and
even god doesn’t know everything
